Why Fall Is the Perfect Time to Visit Amelia Island: A Local’s Guide

When you think about a beach vacation, summer is likely the first thing that comes to mind. But as locals here on Amelia Island, we can tell you, fall is when this island truly shines. The crowds thin, the weather cools just enough to be comfortable, and the island's natural beauty becomes even more inviting. Whether you're planning your first visit or returning for a slower-paced escape, fall might just be the best time to explore everything Amelia Island has to offer.

What Changes After Summer?

Summer on Amelia Island really kicks off around Memorial Day and runs through Labor Day. By mid-September, the energy begins to shift. Restaurants are easier to get into, beach parking opens up, and the temperatures start to dip, just enough to make outdoor adventures more enjoyable. And yes, it’s still warm enough to swim in the ocean well into October.

Fall Activities & Outdoor Adventures

Fall on Amelia Island is perfect for exploring the outdoors. You can bike or hike through Fort Clinch State Park or along the Amelia Island Greenway. Kayaking through the creeks and marshes is far more pleasant without the summer bugs, and the fall bird migration makes for incredible wildlife viewing, especially at Egans Creek.

The golden light during this time of year is ideal for photography, particularly at sunrise on the beach or sunset at the downtown marina.

  • Island Hop Craft Beer Festival (October) - Featuring local breweries, cideries, and distilleries.
  • Amelia Island Half Marathon (October 11–12, 2025) - Includes a 5K and 12K for non-distance runners.
  • Georgia-Florida Game Weekend (Late October) - Even if you’re not a fan, enjoy the vibrant downtown atmosphere.
  • Right Whale Festival (First Weekend in November) - A celebration of the endangered North Atlantic right whale, perfect for families.
  • Dickens on Centre (December, still technically fall!) - Downtown transforms into a Victorian village to kick off the holiday season.

Fall Golf: Peak Season on Amelia Island

Golfers take note—fall is the *peak* season for golf here. With fewer bugs, milder temperatures, and pristine course conditions, it’s the perfect time to tee off. But book early: fall rates go up, and tee times fill fast. Top local courses include:

  • The Golf Club of Amelia Island - (accessed via The Ritz-Carlton)
  • Oak Marsh Course -  at Omni Amelia Island (Pete Dye course)
  • Amelia River Club - a well-maintained and more affordable public option

Where to Eat

Wicked Bao is one of our favorite places to eat. Tell Nathalie the Sunshine Travelers sent you.

We’re lucky to have a thriving local dining scene that stays open year-round. Some of our favorites include:

  • The Patio at 5th and Ash– Outdoor courtyard seating, live music, and a cozy vibe for cool evenings
  • Wicked Bao – Incredible seasonal specials and sake sangria
  • Macoma Coffee & Brewery – Coffee by day, beer by night—don’t miss their seasonal offerings

  • Omni Amelia Island Resort – Full-service beachfront resort with golf access
  • Elizabeth Pointe Lodge and Seaside Amelia Inn – Smaller, boutique-style beachfront properties

There are also great historic inns and B&Bs in downtown Fernandina Beach for a charming, walkable experience.
