When most people think about a beach vacation, they immediately think summer. And if you've never been to Amelia Island before, you might assume that June, July, and August are the best times to come here. But if you ask us as locals, when we really love living on Amelia Island, fall is pretty hard to beat. The temperatures start coming down, the humidity finally begins to give us a little bit of a break, and yet we still have plenty of days when it's warm enough to spend some time on the beach.
And then during the week, things get just a little bit quieter. You can walk in downtown Fernandina Beach without nearly as many people around. It's easier to get into restaurants. The beaches feel a little bit more open. And you start getting into what I think is one of the best stretches of the year on the island. But fall here isn't just about the weather.
There are festivals, events, things happening downtown, and eventually we work our way towards one of the most absolute favorite Amelia Island traditions, which is Dickens on Center.

so today we thought we'd talk about why we love Amelia Island in the fall, what you can expect if you visit, and some of the things happening around the island that might make you rethink when you should plan an Amelia Island vacation. before we go into the episode, I want to just say this episode is going to be our last episode of season one.

So Melissa, most people think places like Amelia Island, I mean just the name island in general, conjures a summer vacation spot.
think one of the things that we've always said that we love so much is that, in August it can just be brutally hot and brutally humid. And yes, you can go to the beach. you definitely want some shade, you'll be getting in the water a lot, but in the fall
we have a little bit of a break in that humidity, a little bit of break in that heat, especially as, September and October wears on. And what I love is that you can actually start sitting outside again. So I love to eat outside. And so that was the great thing about, we're in Florida. But literally summer can be so brutally hot. And if you're not somewhere that's shaded, for example, the humidity just makes it miserable where you're g you want to be inside. and so that's one of the things that that I love.
And then I would say the second thing is that a lot of times you think, for example, let's do a spring break, beach vacation, let's go to Amelia Island. Well, at that time of the year, while the weather is starting to warm up, the water is gonna still be really, really cold, but then it stays warmer longer. So you don't think about that, but in September, even into October, Yeah, we've
been out swimming in the ocean well into October. Now I will say about that time though it does start to really drop off quickly. But we'll see, with the weather patterns, how that continues on and what that continues to be like over time. One of the things we've noticed is that I think the other day you said they're down to like four
Turtle nests left on the beaches. Yeah, well, I don't know about four, but just where I've been going in the mornings, there's just a handful that I can see down the beach. so there's definitely those last ones that lay, they're still gonna hatch. but really by the end of August, probably first week in September, Labor Day, it's really gonna peter out. But I will say if you are here.
let's say for Labor Day weekend at the very beginning of September, definitely look for that. And if you've never experienced one of the turtle nest excavations, they have a fantastic website where they post those, they post the times, the exact location, makes it easy to find. They do a really good job of educating people about the turtles, about the nest. and so every once in a while, not every time, but every once in a while you'll get to see a live one that hasn't made it out that they'll
try to put into this sea. So I will put the link to that in the show notes. as a local, that is something that I actually keep as a bookmark on my phone. So it's very easy to find. But it's very easy to navigate the website. I'll put the main website and then it just says turtle nest evacuations and it gives the schedule. But that's just something really fun to do both for locals and for visitors.
It's at the very beginning of September now when we're recording this, so but within the next week after Labor Day, I think they'll be all swimming to the sea. Yeah. Well, and that so I think that's really why we wanted to do this episode because this is really marking the end of summer. and while we tend to stay home every year for summer, you guys know we travel all over the world and all.
Place, but we typically try to stay home during summer so that we can enjoy the beach. We love the beach and we love being there even when it's hot. but what we want to talk about today, though, is really the things that happen in the fall that we're like.
Wow, we don't ever want to miss these events either because there's some some of our absolute favorite things happen during the fall. Yeah, and the other thing that I would add too is that we notice a lot of things like it's easier to get into restaurants, without having to think you can make a reservation way ahead of time, easier to find parking. and the good thing so I know we're not specifically talking about the beach, but I would just add for the beach
We are fortunate that we can typically always find parking somewhere close to us for the beach, but then especially as fall wears on, it's easy to find parking at the beach. and then you just like I mentioned, it's just more pleasurable to walk around downtown, to eat outside, to s sit outside for music when you're just not pouring sweat and soaking wet. So that's the other thing about
fall that makes it comfortable. That's a good point, is that one of one of the reasons we truly love Amelia Island is it's not like a lot of beach towns where after summer the restaurants, the shops, everything tend to kind of shutter their doors and you'll see them again in the spring of next year. in Amelia Island, it's a year-round island. We have people who live there full time like ourselves.
And so lots of our restaurants on the island typically stay open year round. All the shops tend to stay open year round. And I think the the city and the convention and visitors bureau, I think they do a really good job of trying to drive traffic in that off season as well. And that's why I say they've put some really fantastic events that happen in the fall.
Yes, there's some that happen in early spring too that you don't want to miss, but some of our favorites are the fall activities. And the other thing I would like to mention is a lot of times, depending on where you live, farmers markets are a summertime thing. but here they the f every Saturday morning there's gonna be a farmers market. and now they've actually have that artist market, which is just a few blocks away as well.
And so that's a little bit different from places that you go where it's like, okay, the farmer's market is seasonal, because then you will have people with different kind of food things, honey that's local, fresh shrimp, that that kind of thing, not just produce. so but produce is available for a lot longer in Florida than other places And I think one of the things that I've noticed is it doesn't feel like a ghost town.
Because on the south end of the island you have those two major resorts, the Ritz-Carlton and the Omni. And so during the fall they have tons of conferences that they put on there. And so people are always there and they tend to go out in the evenings or extend their time on the island and spend a few extra days. And so it never feels like a ghost town around.
Yeah, totally agree.
Well let's why don't we take it month by month and just talk about like kind of the changes or the different activities that we notice on the island or the or our favorite things that happen during those months. Sounds good. So let's start with September. So of course Labor Day weekend, a lot of people do that last minute beach, last beach hurrah.
for example. So, but I definitely would say it's a lot quieter than it would be in the summer. so definitely also look for those turtlenes evacuations and still you're gonna want some shade, but I think we are already seeing that it's not quite so hot, quite so humid. and the beaches when I've been going in the morning this past week, the beaches have been a lot quieter, even first thing in the morning.
So one of the things I want to mention is that Amelia Island has a couple of state parks on it. and one of those, Fort Clinch, is a place where you can camp year round. And so if you're a camper, this is something you're gonna need to plan ahead for because it's a very popular camping place.
But it's really cool. You're camping under all these live oaks with the moss hanging down. The the atmosphere of of that state park is just is beautiful, relaxing. and so as you get into the fall, having a fire in the fire pit, out sitting, by that in the evenings, not having to deal with the, the bugs and stuff like that. really a good time to start thinking about
bring in your camper, bring in your tent, however it is that you like to to go and stay in there at that part. And one thing that people may not know is that Amelia Island is has the beach on one side and then it's a river on the other side, thus making it the island. it's not the ocean all the way around. So it's Amelia River on one side. But then we have lots of like little tributary rivers and stuff. So that campground actually has you they have a river campground on one side with a river.
and then the beach campground on the other side. So it just makes it a unique place to experience a couple of different things. And we've seen you can go up to the fort and then we've seen in the evenings like dolphin watching tours, island tours going out, pirate ship tours going out, and they're waving at people on stores. So that just makes it a neat location to visit. Also just
being able to go see the fort when it's not so hot. And I do know that they have monthly events there. I'll need to dig that up. We won't talk about those specifically. but the the Friends of Fort Clinch, they put on reenactments and all kinds of different things. So I'll put a link to that as well because we have been able to see some of those and it's just a very unique thing. So even if you're not camping there, Fort Clinch State Park is worth some time while you're on the island to explore and explore the fort.
when it's not quite so hot. And that's where people really find a lot of the shark teeth up that way. Yes. one other thing that we should talk about with September and October, and it has a little bit to do with weather, but that is the tail end of hurricane season. Now this year we've had very little to no impact of hurricanes at all. I think, the knock on wood, the
the Gulf and the Atlantic have been extremely quiet this year from a hurricane. It has to do with a lot of the El Nino and the the temperature of the waters and things like that. So that's kind of what they expected. but I think if you're planning, even if not this year, if we're planning it in the fall, think about this is a possibility. being flexible the plans, keeping an eye on the weather. So and having plans that you can yeah. Or or flexible plans or something like that. 'Cause it is definitely a possibility. Yeah.
But this year it's been absolutely nothing. we have had I I would say a good bit more of like rain and thunderstorms recently. but that's the great thing about there being so much to do on the island. Now October, I think that's where we're really starting to get into what feels like fall on the island.
Yeah, and so one of the things that we wanted to highlight is a few of the festivals and events that they'll be having. and so one of the things, while it's not like an October fest festival, a lot of times you think October and beer festivals and things like that. So October 3rd from one to four, they are having the Island Hopcraft Beer Festival. so downtown Fernandina Beach, it'll be like a festival
they'll have distilleries and breweries and probably some different vendors and and different things like that. so that does to support I think the downtown area. So we're gonna put a link to all these different events so that you can go on and find more information. But that's a really fun one because that's kind of like what you would traditionally think of, I think for the end of September, early October is having some kind of beer festival.
it's a it's a really fun event. And if you're one of the craft beer people, or you just like local things, come in, check this one out. They usually have music. And then the the fun is gonna spill over into the downtown area afterwards. So the Green Turtle, one of the music venues downtown.
should be hopping afterwards. the the Palace Saloon, several different venues around town will have the after party, if you will. And then later in October, October twenty fourth, from eleven thirty to three thirty is the Taste of Amelia, which will take place in downtown. So
Top chefs and restaurants and beverage partners from throughout the island will come together and they're gonna have this taste of Amelia as well. Yeah, I think we've we didn't talk about this in September, but September is dining month. that's right. On a island. Right. So the whole month from the first through the thirtieth. a lot of participating restaurants have specials that you can go in and it's things that they've
curated just for the dining month. some of are offering prefix meals, where it's kind of almost like a tasting menu, if you will. So that's one thing that's really fun in September and I forgot about that as we were talking about. Yeah, and you were actually looking up something about that the other day and there were a few where you were like, Wow, that's a really good it's like a dinner for two for like a really great price. So that's a good time to
support restaurants and stuff too, since they do have a little bit of pullback from the summer crowds. but yeah, that's September dining month. Yeah. But October, sitting outside on patios in October, especially in the evenings, that's gonna be perfect. There might even be a few times where you need a little light windbreaker or something like that. so make sure to to plan accordingly.
But I believe that you're really gonna enjoy dining outside in the month of October.
What about November? Because I think most people think that that's just like I don't know. It's almost the doldrums no matter where you go, right? Yeah, so you're still definitely gonna have some nicer, warmer weather and some really great days. maybe just not as much toward the end of the month for for swimming, but it's a great time to if you and your family are like, okay, we don't wanna spend Thanksgiving.
go into one person's house or it becomes a great location. It it there's, lots of rentals on Amelia Island, homes, and so you could get together and do your Thanksgiving. But a really cool event that they have, which is actually a sport that I had never heard of before we moved to Amelia Island, is the Petanque Amelia Island Open.
So and this is a huge event. We've gone down to it. You can you can just go if you're not like participating, we've just gone down to it and walk around. It happens down at the harbor front. They've recently redone the park down there and it looks absolutely beautiful, but it's what would you it's it's kind of like Bocce but a little bit different.
but the people who compete in this, like this is a lifestyle for them.
I do think the people who are really into Petanque probably just fell off their chairs that we said it's like bocce, because they are really into this and it happens to be the world's largest or at least in the America, yeah. The America's largest international well, it's an international that's so yeah, the world's largest Petanque event in the Americas and they have world champions who come here, lots of players and then spectators from around the world.
And they play Petanque And it's funny because I see them in one of the parks on Atlantic Avenue. I see them out there playing this. Yeah. All the time. Yeah, I think that's it's so it's and they have almost have they have the setup for it. I guess because of this. so it's just a very interesting and unique festival if you happen to be or plan to be in town in the middle of November, November thirteenth through fifteenth. Yeah.
But get through November. I I still think it's just a great time to be there, even if there's not a lot of activities that are happening. The weather's usually a good bit cooler. and so, just being there, hanging out, having a little downtime is a great time to visit Amelia Island.

But December, that's to me like December is one of the best months on the island.
Yes, definitely so. just seeing everything. well, I guess I will say so let's back up because it does feel like Christmas, but the day after Thanksgiving, so if you are on Amelia Island on Thanksgiving, they want you to wear your pajamas downtown.
The shops are open with the start of some Christmas shopping, Black Friday specials. They usually have things like games, maybe Santa, just a lot of different things downtown. So that's a fun Black Friday shopping event downtown. It kind of kicks off that Christmas season before we get into December. They actually do a contest for the best pajamas. Yes. And so you'll see people all over town.
wearing their pajamas. and some people are very creative. like, I know one year we saw the guy who was dressed up like cousin Eddie from Christmas vacation, walking around town. But Grinches and Yeah, be creative. Like if you're coming and you're gonna be here for that, get matching family pajamas and stuff like that. And just have fun with it.
and I know that like probably some of the guys listening to this are like, my God, why why are you doing this to us? Why are you throwing this idea out there in the universe that we're gonna have to wear pajamas downtown? But you'll see, everybody does it, and you won't be the oddball and and when you go into shops and restaurants, people call it out and be like, well love your pajamas or whatever and so
just be creative with it. Yeah, that's always been a fun thing when when we've been at home and had family in town. We all dress up in our pajamas and go down to that. but yeah so then let's go into December. the second weekend in December is always the big Dickens on Center festival. So it kicks off always on Thursday evenings lighted lantern parade.
so that also lots of people dress up in their Dickens costumes, not just people who are, with the event or with different organizations. Everybody is welcome to dress up, bring lanterns, participate in that, but then also just dress up all weekend, as well. And if anybody's wondering what we're saying about Dickens, it's Charles Dickens. Yes. So think of that period of time and so people are wearing clothing
kind of resembling that period. Some people have turned it into a little bit of steampunk as well. they hire people who come in and are like actors, they walk around fully costumed out. sometimes they'll have the the bicycles with that big, huge front wheel that like
the wheels like ten foot tall and they're riding around on stilts. People on stilts. they close the entire downtown area off. And they have stages set up. And so there's an area where people will do concerts, they'll do plays like night before Christmas is always one of the big plays that
They do at least once or twice. Yeah. Some of the Dickens. They'll do some of the Dickens. and lot yeah, lots of different ones for adults and for kids. They have Santa, so you can make appointments and have your pictures made with Santa. so no guarantees, but for the past few years, rather than having fireworks in the evenings, they have done a drone show that we have even noticed over the past three years, like
get dramatically better as the technology has even changed over those few years. They have a f a but a really fantastic drone show every evening. Yeah, I think it's like fifteen hundred drones or something like that. It's huge. And they light up the sky and usually they have music associated with it. It's just a really cool event. It's fun for the whole family. And then all the way up and down the streets you're gonna have
people who come vendor setup and so you'll have the opportunity to it's it's a Christmas market as well. Right. And so you'll have the opportunity to do a little bit of shopping. And support little small businesses, which is always nice for the holidays as well. So they do have a few special things that you have to make reservations for. So they have like the igloos that you can make a reservation to have dinner and they have a few special events. But everything else is basically free just to come and
come and walk around. So it's a very fun event. It is the besides the Shrimp Festival, which takes place in May, it is the other largest event that they have on Amelia Island. Yeah. And I would encourage you once again dress up and participate. So it's not just the actors that come in. it's everybody in town will will dress up to some extent.
The first night of it though is that lantern parade. And I always think I just think that one is so cool. people have different types of lanterns, some that they've made really intricate, and and really cool. Other people just carry like a flashlight lantern type thing. I think you y in order to participate, you're supposed to have some type of lighted device.
to be in there. People will put lights around their dogs and walk them in the parade. So really cool thing to do and to participate in and the the biggest thing is just come and and be a part of it. Saturday morning they typically have a dog parade that's always really cute that people do lots of really cool costumes as well. Yeah. We've seen like dog
team set up pulling, wagons and stuff like that. it it's fun. People really have a a lot of fun with this time of year. And so come check it out. It it's bound to be like one of the things that you put on your calendar to do year after year. We've got family members that they're like, Hey, we wanna, make that reservation for for next year.
So that we can be back down here. Yeah. So second weekend of December. And so for 2026, it's the eleventh through the 14th. the other thing I wanted to mention that we have also enjoyed going to and I couldn't find it on the calendar for twenty twenty six, and maybe they just haven't set the date yet for it, is like the holiday open houses. So they'll have several homes in the downtown area that they choose. They people decorate them for Christmas, and then you pay to walk through a handful of homes.
most of them historic, which is which is neat. But then there's sometimes there's been a few lofts and and different kinds of things. So it's a fun way to have a peek into some homes that you normally wouldn't get to see. So I'm not sure when that is because I couldn't find it on the calendar. But if that's something you're interested in or if you'll be in December, usually it's in early December, probably the first weekend. keep an eye out for that. Yeah. I think
The Amelia Island Historic Center puts that on.
Melissa, we've talked about a lot of activities. but one of the things that we have done is we put together a Amelia Island visitors guide. So that's a resource that's available on our website. Melissa can put the link to that inside the show notes.
But go out there, download that visitor's guide because not only do we have all of these events, plus a few that we haven't even talked about, and as well you can look out into spring and see what's coming up in spring of next year. but we have like the restaurants and we've got some of our favorite restaurants listed in there, things that we would recommend. Also, fall is a fabulous time to play golf on Amelia Island. That's a good point.
Summer, we know you're a visitor if you're playing golf in summer. It is so hot. Yeah. but fall is probably the best time of the year to get out and enjoy Amelia Island from a golf perspective. But we have stuff like that that is inside this visitor's guide, and we just encourage you to go download that, take a look at it, and and use that in your planning. We also have hotels in there.
You can see I've got separated by where they're at on the island, whether they're on the beach, the south end of the island, downtown, or right in the center of the island, the restaurants, where the shopping centers are. So go out, download that that guide and use it as a resource.
So Melissa, who should consider coming to Amelia Island for the fall? I mean, honestly, just about anybody. So as far as couples, there are a lot of really neat bed and breakfast historic places that would be very neat to stay that have some unique amenities. So it could be a nice getaway for the fall for couples.
So for empty nesters as well. So people who aren't having to worry about kids' school schedules and things like that, you don't have, like we've mentioned, the weather's nice, it's easier to get in the restaurants, but it's gonna be less expensive as well, and you're not there with the crowds. if you have the ability to work remotely, it is a great place to get your work done during the day and then explore.
In the evenings, or get up early in the morning and take a beach walk and then explore in the evening. So it's a great place for people who are able to work remotely. for families, if now that you've got your Labor Day break, you've got your fall break, your Thanksgiving break, because they go back to school so early, they have all these different breaks. So for families, it's a great time. For kids, they would really enjoy some of those events that we've talked about surrounding Thanksgiving, wearing your pajamas downtown, doing the Dickens Festival as well.
If you love the beach, you probably don't care what it's like. You just a beach lover. So like we mentioned earlier in the fall, if swimming and being in the sun warm is your priorities, but if you just love to walk the beach, that's the nice thing about it is that even as we get into Thanksgiving, we we'd always go down as a family and hunt for shells. And if you do have storms, I mean you don't want to be right in the storm, but like after the storm, it can be a good time.
to hunt for shells, hunt for shark teeth. we have such a long stretch of beach. I mean I don't know how long it is, but I would say it's probably like a ten mile or more stretch of beach. Yeah, I mean because you could w and we've ridden our bikes all the way from almost like up by the Fort Clinch on the Which is the very north end of the island. All the way down to kind of what we would consider the middle point, past Main Beach down to the down to the next part.
The other thing, though, is that if you enjoy unique history as well, Amelia Island has very unique history. There is actually Amelia Island History Museum. There are historical tours you can take in the fall. We didn't mention this, but if you are a history lover, they also do some cemetery tours around Halloween as well. So it's the Bosque Cemetery. Is that what it's called?
Cemetery. so I can look that up and put a link to that as well. But they do some tours because Amelia Island has such a unique history, it's been under eight different flags, and pirates were on the island, and then we have the fort as well and the reenactments. so if you enjoy that kind of history, you can visit that, and there's a great museum at the fort as well. So a lot of historical things to see and do. And if you're a
foodie, I would say there's lots of really great food of all types here on the island and you can check, like I said, go back to that Amelia Island visitors guide that we put together.
And you can get more information on that. Yeah, anything that's from in our guide. So anything from seafood or international cuisine, which is I think being at the beach all the time, we kind of tend to lend lean towards some of our international cuisine, but there's actually a Michelin-rated restaurant at the Ritz now as well. So you can have all kinds of fine dining all the way down to just very, very casual things. So there's definitely no shortage of food options on the island.
So Scott, w I guess what we want people to understand is that Amelia Island is not just a summer beach destination.
For sure. So there is, summer gives you I I think most people would come for the beach because it is just literally too hot to enjoy being downtown and walking around and and doing some of the other things until it gets to be the evening. But the fall it just is definitely
starts to get cooler, starts to get a lot quieter, a slower pace. but then we have these really great events. So yes, you can still go to the beach, walk, be in the beach, and then also participate in some of these events. I think that's really why we wanted to do this episode. And if you've only ever thought about Amelia Island as a summer beach destination, you're missing a completely different side of the island.
Don't get us wrong, we love the beach. That's obviously one of the reasons that we live here. But some of our favorite days on Amelia Island happen after the summer crowds have gone home. it's like being able to walk the beach in the morning without it being brutally hot. It's heading downtown for dinner and sitting outside, maybe even sitting around a little open fire pit.
It's having fewer people around during the week. And then as we get closer to the holidays, watching downtown completely change for events like Dickens on Center. And I just love how they come in and they let the students do the artwork and all the windows of the stores and they paint the windows for the holidays. It's just so amazing. Now, interestingly enough, we never designated what we have been producing as a season one. They've just been individual episodes. but as we have had some life changes, Scott retiring,
kind of deciding what's next for us in our lives. and then the podcast naturally follows that. We have decided That this episode will close out season one of the Sunshine Travelers podcast. So we've actually gone back in and designated all of our episodes as season one. And then the next episode that we produced will be the beginning of season two.
