One of the things that we have learned over the years is that how you travel matters just as much as where you go. That's especially true with cruising. Cruise lines are often talked about as if they may be interchangeable, but they're really not. Each one has its own personality, its own strengths, and its own idea of what a great experience at sea should feel like. So we've decided to be intentional about this, and over time we want to travel
all of the world's largest cruise lines, sailing on what we think are their most interesting itineraries and share what the experience is actually like on board. Not from a brochure or not from a ship tour, but from living on these ships for weeks at a time. This episode is the first in a series. We're starting with Princess Cruises and more specifically the Crown Princess. We spent
21 days on board, sailing from Hobart, Tasmania through Australia and Southeast Asia and finishing in Singapore. We'll touch on the itinerary at a very high level, but today isn't about the ports. It's about the ship, the cruise line, and what it's actually like to live on board for three weeks. We'll talk about what worked, what we enjoyed, and a few things that didn't quite land.

So Melissa, when you think about Princess Cruises, before we even stepped on board, what kind of experience were you expecting?
So I expected something fairly traditional, comfortable, a little bit more classic. Princess Cruises is known as the love boat after all. I would say it's not luxury cruising and it's not high energy or party focused. You'll find an older demographic on Princess with not so many children, but there were a few. Yeah. And I think that a hundred percent depends on the itinerary.
that you do. So with ours being a long itinerary, I mean, there were some kids, but you know, thinking about like it wasn't a school break or anything like that. There were definitely a lot of repeat cruisers on board. You could tell that this was a cruise line that people come back to. People were very willing to tell us, we have such and such status or we've been on these other cruises with Princess, that kind of thing.
And I would say especially for this itinerary, there was a lot of Princess Loyal cruisers. So the majority of the passengers on the itinerary were Australians. We left out of Australia, went to Singapore, like Scott mentioned. ⁓ Some of them were only doing a portion of the itinerary that we did. So when we got on Unho BART, that was kind of like finishing up a Sydney to Sydney itinerary. It was unlike any...
itinerary that I had ever seen. then we had people who, a lot of people got off in Sydney, more people got on, people got off in Brisbane, people got on. And so for that first part, there was a lot of, okay, here's like how some of the logistics are gonna work. And if it didn't apply to you, you just kind of ignored it and did your report day and all that kind of thing.
It's also important to note that this ship was going to be dry docked at the end of our sailing for some refurbishments and necessary updates. is one of the older ships in the Princess Cruise Line fleet and some of the passengers who had sailed on other ships and not this one definitely commented on that need for some updates and some refurbishment.
Yeah, there were a few things that felt a little older or outdated, but I would say that overall, the Crown Princess is still a very nice, albeit smaller vessel in their fleet, and that comes with its own pluses and minuses. Let's talk about the ship itself, the Crown Princess. What were some of your first thoughts as we boarded that ship?
So I always like to think, let's get our stuff to the room. Let's get our stuff organized and start exploring the ship and see kind of, where are the different things that we like and we enjoy. and then of course, let's, get some lunch. about you? remember walking into this large marble Plaza with this grand staircases and glass elevators. And from the very moment of boarding the ship,
This felt like it was going to have a slightly more upscale ambience. It wasn't huge, like some of the ships that we've seen with, open railing that goes several decks high. I think this was two or three decks that were open up in this vestibule. And before we get too far into our review, I want to give just one important bit of context here.
is that we stayed in an inside stateroom on this sailing. By the time we had booked, all of the veranda cabins and suites were already sold out, which honestly tells you something about the demand for this itinerary. And honestly, I mean, we went ahead and booked it. We knew this was an itinerary that we wanted to do. We had specific goals. If you've heard some of the other podcast episodes, we needed to hit.
both Australia and Asia, we needed it to fall within a certain timeframe and there just weren't a lot of options out there. So we had some reservations about the inside cabin before we went, how small it would be, how confining an inside cabin might be for a 21 day sailing, would we feel claustrophobic. We got to our room and honestly it was small, but upfront we realized there's not gonna be a lot of space for relaxing. There's no couch like you might have in a veranda state room.
No balcony, course, no windows looking out. But what do think, Scott? I would say surprisingly, it turned out to be perfect. Once we settled in, the space worked really well. Yes, there are no windows, which actually meant that we got some of the best sleep of the entire trip. It was dark.
quiet and easy to fully disconnect at night, turn off our brains and get some great rest. Yeah. And I would add too is that you can definitely make a cruise way less expensive by doing an inside stateroom. So we thought it was great. We didn't feel claustrophobic. We did have some times where the seas were a little bit rough. It almost like rocked you to sleep at night.
So it really was, it was great. We did have some challenges with the air conditioning at one point and it wasn't totally unexpected on an older ship. So this is where the service really stood out. I would say our steward went and found an oscillating fan. We were able to use that in our room, the rest of the sailing when we needed it. They even called down a couple of times just to say, did you get the fan?
How is the fan? How is the temperature? Like, I felt like they really did a good job of following up on that because it could have felt like, well, we're going into dry dock. It is what it is. But no, they were actively trying to fix that would say that small fix made a huge difference for The cabin ended up being very comfortable at night. We typically sleep with a ceiling fan.
We live in the South, we've always lived in the South. It's just a necessity to have that fan. I mean, we actually like that. I felt like they did a good job of remedying that situation.
So if you were looking at an itinerary on a particular cruise and either because of price or availability, the only thing that is available is an inside cabin or...
that really fits into your budget better or that cabin would allow you to, do your shore excursions or whatever. I would say don't give it a second thought and just book it. We really ended up enjoying our cabin. Most of the time when we were at sea, there wasn't anything to see anyway, but we can go out onto the decks or up to other levels that had windows. And I don't know that we really would have spent much time on the veranda if we would have had one anyway. Yeah, I don't think so because
Like when we were at sea, was water as far as you could see on both sides. so sitting out there, wasn't like it was going to be a more comfortable experience. And it just allowed us to go and see other parts of the ship and experience, the open air at times. A few times it was a little bit cooler, especially on the first part of the trip. And,
you probably wouldn't want to sit out there on that balcony during that part. And then I would say as we got to the last part of the trip, it was really hot. And so you might not want to sit out there on that balcony. So to add to that, just being very dark for sleeping at night, turned out to be perfect. So there are some itineraries that you definitely wouldn't necessarily want to do an inside cabin. ⁓ Alaska is one that we can think of that if you're going into Glacier Bay, but
Regardless of where you're going, always remember that there are plenty of decks and places where you can go sit outside for views and fresh air. And sometimes we did that Alaska from our balcony. And sometimes the view of the glaciers was better on one of the decks. So you do not have to have, somewhere that you can see out to have an enjoyable cruise. Well, let's shift and talk a little bit about the comforts and amenities aboard the Crown Princess.
daily life on board becomes really important on a cruise this long. So how did this ship feel from a day-to-day perspective? I want to start out by saying that I have no idea how people do only three-day cruises. We barely can get our bearings. I mean, there were maybe a week in where we were like, we didn't realize this was here, or to really enjoy it. And I would say...
Years ago, we did a Disney cruise that was three days and you just feel like, I got to pack all this stuff in. So it's not like necessarily relaxing. So I would just throw that in there. On the Crown Princess, I would say that there was a very balanced atmosphere on the ship. The ship accommodates about 3000 people. So that's probably considered a mid-size ship by today's standards, because now they're making these mega ships, have all these amenities.
So you can definitely find energy on the ship and activities where you wanted to, but you can also find plenty of quiet spaces very easily and not just in your stateroom. There was this one club at the back of the ship
called the Skywalker's Lounge, which was always very quiet and a great place to unwind or even do a little bit of work during the day. It was never crowded. You had a great view out to the water. The bar was closed during the day, but some of the technology, which we're going to talk about here in a little bit, made it very easy to have drinks or coffee delivered to you just while you sat there. And then late at night, that particular spot was transformed into a disco lounge. The bar opened.
We never really found it ever to be super crowded. And I think that was probably because of the age group on the sailing, I was just a great place. think that was one of our favorite places. I think we spent, besides being in the room, that's this place that we spent the second most amount of time at. Well, a big plus for us.
Was all of the lounges, the deck areas and places where you could just sit without feeling like you needed to be entertained. but there was definitely plenty of entertainment on the ship as well. You could go into your app and you could see all of the activities for that day. And it had the ability to add them into like a custom itinerary. And I would say you could find something to do from morning until night. And Melissa even joked,
on towards the end, when I had a few vacation days I was taking, I wasn't working. She was like, wow, you've filled up our whole day. And it wasn't that I planned to do all those things. I just wanted them quickly available and sorted into things that we might be interested in. So I would go through and of the things that we might be interested in, I would add them in and we could see it. One thing I'll say is they keep you moving on the ship.
All the activities seemed to go back and forth from the front of ship to the back. So you did get a lot of walking in every day. And I should mention that on this trip, I was in a walking boot and had a knee scooter and crutches. And for the most part, it was easy enough to get around from a mobility perspective, but you definitely learned which elevators were the easiest to navigate. and so if you're thinking of this trip and you do have mobility issues,
Don't worry, I think you can get around perfectly fine on this ship. So Scott, let's spend a little bit of time talking about the technology on the ship. So between the mobile app and the medallion that Princess Cruises has.
It makes for a really great experience. So the medallion that they give you looks like an Apple AirTag and it's used to open your stateroom and it's also a way that they can find you anywhere on the ship to deliver food and drinks that you've ordered in the app. also, you can enable it to locate your shipmate. So not only like the person in your cabin, but if you have other people you're traveling with, you can find each other on the ship in case you don't have, Wi-Fi
So we wanna add though, for all you privacy people out there, you can turn that tracking part off, but it would degrade your service on board because you wouldn't be able to use that particular feature. So in addition to be able to find you, some of the bars were equipped with the devices that would tell them who you are when you walk up. So you didn't have to scan it or sign any paper. They already knew who you were, what package you had.
⁓ And I think that's probably something that's everywhere on the newer ships. And they were probably like integrating that into some of like the most common places because we saw a mix of that, but that was kind of nice. They would be, just be like, Melissa, and then here's your beverage or, or whatever, because you did have to load like a photo of yourself. Yeah. And sometimes when you were in the shows and you ordered, a drink to your table,
they would come out and they knew exactly where to bring it to. Like you didn't have to wait for one of the stewards that was running around and had a lot of tables to wait on. You didn't have to wait for them because you could do that. And then they would send it directly to you. And for longer cruises, I would say that the basics truly matter. And there were multiple self-service laundry facilities on the ship.
But there was almost always seemed to be a line waiting to use those machines. And Melissa even commented how extremely hot those rooms were. They do offer full service laundry and the ship also uses Starlink for the internet. And we found that to be excellent. We paid for the highest level of internet service since I was working on the ship, but I'll say it was very reliable and I was able to do video calls with little to no problem.
during the entirety of our trip. The one thing that I will end with about the staterooms is that they did have the smallest bathrooms you have ever seen. Even the cruise director would joke that you had to spread the soap on the shower walls and rub against them because there's no room to soap up. Maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but not by very much at all.
Yeah. So Scott, real quick, I want to add one thing about the laundry. If you are a certain status level on Princess Cruises or if you have a suite, I think that full service laundry is completely included. It was nice though that you didn't have to, they had said you'd have to pay for the soap and the, the dryer sheets but, also pay for the machines, but the way they had it set up, they were completely free and you just dialed a number and they would bring it to you. And I just tried to find off times.
⁓ and set a timer and come back. So it worked out fine because the per item laundry service was a little bit expensive, I would say.
Well, let's talk a little bit about the entertainment. We're not the people that require a lot of high-level entertainment on the ship. But what did you think about Princess Cruises?
entertainment for a 21-day cruise is an interesting test, I think, for a cruise line. Two-thirds of our days were spent at sea, and so they needed to have a wide variety of entertainment. I would say that the production quality was good.
But don't come expecting full Cirque du Soleil style entertainment every night. I would also add that they were catering to a mostly Australian audience and an older audience. And over a three week period, the variation of the entertainment is just bound to experience a little bit of repetition. But overall, I thought that they did a really good job.
Yeah. So it isn't a cruise where you're going to get a brand new like headline show every night. They do have a, like they do have a cast that did their like headliner, wouldn't you say? Like rotating shows, So they spread those Broadway type shows throughout the cruise for the people that were like employed by them and who were on the ship all the time. And then they mixed in other acts.
people who they had hired to come on and off the ship, So some of them were on in Australia and then we did have quite a few people who, when we sailed from Cairns up to Indonesia, like they stayed on that whole time. So they weren't employed and so they're just like contract. Some of them you could tell like people had seen them on other cruises before and were really, really excited.
that just gives a variety to the entertainment. And I also felt like they did a good job of listening. So if something had been really popular they would add more shows of that person or another matinee show, or they put them in another venue for like a smaller audience. so I think it really felt like that they would listen to the feedback. And with a 21 day cruise, they had an opportunity to
cater to what people liked. know one thing in particular that was really popular was they did little games like, sailors versus the crew. What was it called? Officers versus something. And that became something really, really popular. They ended up having almost every single day. Yeah. was the officers versus guests and, ⁓ like little game things. And that was always like people packed out for that. So just like a variety of entertainment.
we enjoyed some of the more Broadway style shows that they did. They had an illusionist that was really good. And I think those were some of our favorites. We did deprioritize the ones that were like cover bands from the folk rock era, like Karen Carpenter. I jokingly said it was elevator music.
But if entertainment is one of your top priorities on a ship, this may not be the best choice for you. It was great and we enjoyed it, but it probably wasn't what they're most known for. Outside of the nightly entertainment, they also had all kinds of groups that would meet every day. Everything from solo travelers to Bible studies to knitting groups. And of course they have a casino.
They do bingo and then they would do game shows like Deal or No Deal Yeah. And I would add to like other kinds of entertainment. They also had karaoke that you could do and trivia. And so there was literally like Scott mentioned, there was something going on all the time. And some of those big shows, they would fill up. They would have two shows every night and they would, they would definitely fill up and,
People love those. That's one thing that I would say is towards the end of the trip. like they would fill up these shows and they would run out of space. And so there's nowhere for you to sit. And so if you didn't get there really early, you would miss out. So I think that is maybe a little bit of a, flaw and. in the size of ship that they're dealing with, they just don't have enough space for, for that, but
It's kind of disappointing when you're on a ship and this is part of the entertainment and then you can't go and participate. Yeah. So some of the times like you just couldn't wait till the last minute. yeah. and although we didn't participate in any of these, they had all kinds of dance classes every day. and then towards the end, we saw people who've been taking ballroom classes, testing out their new skills on the dance floor as well.
They also had a big contest that was almost like the voice at the end where people could try out and they had the big chairs and they did that one in the afternoon. So there was, there was literally always something going on in one place or another. Yeah. That was one of the ones where we couldn't get into the theater to see that one because we had something else going on.
and got there a little bit late. Yeah, and if you love a good art auction, they also have those throughout the duration of the cruise. And we met several people who have bought art from these auctions Yeah, evidently it's a thing. A lot of people would go to those art auctions.
I will say though that it's one of the times that they handed out free champagne and so a lot of people just went there for the free champagne.
Well, over a three week period, you can't go without food. So let's talk a little bit about the food. So the package that we had included specialty dining. so real quick, I also want to say we chose that specific package because Scott was going to be working. It costs a little bit extra. You don't have to do that, but he was going to be working. We knew that he would need the premium Starlink.
internet, it gave you multiple devices. I would be trying to do content type stuff. We wanted to do the podcast. So we just chose to add that package on to our cruise
It included the unlimited specialty dining and there are two restaurants on board that were not included in the standard package. The standard package gives you access to the buffets, to the main dining room. You could also get burgers and pizza for casual dining options. In the main dining room, you can choose for having either a reserve time and the same table, same waiter each day, or you can choose the dining room where you just walk up without reservations and they will seat you at the shared table.
And this is really a great way to get to know different people. If you are willing to be a little bit outgoing, you'll find that you start bumping into these people over and over again. And this is how we met our new friends, Peter and Barbara from Brisbane. And we miss them so much and definitely hope to see them again in the future. Breakfast is generally served in the buffet or at least one of the dining rooms would be open for anyone that wanted to sit down service. guests that maybe are wanting
slightly more formal but still casual dining experience. And on days when the ship was at sea, those dining rooms would be open as well for lunch. And while I'm on the topic, most nights are smart casual dress for the dining rooms, but they do have a couple of formal nights. Usually pants and a collared shirt will suffice, but some people like our friends Peter and Barbara would dress to the nines. It's fun, but not when you're having to drag all of that across the world to get there.
Yeah, and that was no big deal not to have. We just tried to, you know, look nice. We're something that still felt nice, but was still casual. So let's talk a little bit more about the specialty dining. Like I said, it was included unlimitedly in our package. So we definitely took advantage of that because why not? They had two options, like I mentioned, one was a steakhouse, which we loved. I think we ate at maybe nine or 10 times out of that 21 days.
Our waiter that we tried to have almost every single time, his name was Christopher. He knew exactly what we liked. He treated us like royalty. He knew what we wanted to drink, if we wanted espresso after. They also had an Italian restaurant, which we enjoyed, but not as much as the steakhouse. I think we probably went there three times. Our package also included specialty coffees. And so the great thing about this is that you could order them in the app and they would deliver them to wherever you are.
So if you were in your stateroom first thing in the morning, they would knock on the door and here's your coffee. So that was great. If you have a sweet tooth, there are some specialty desserts that you could have as part of the upgraded package as well. Almost all of those options are also available a la carte, but you would pay for a lot more for them. So for example, at the specialty restaurants,
It would cost you an additional $80 per person per meal if you didn't include that in your package. So I would say between how many times we ate there, plus it was an upgraded beverage package, plus the internet. I mean, we got definitely got more than what the value that we paid for it would have been. think we definitely, cause we've talked about this before is do you get your value out of a drink package?
Some people who sit at the bar all day, hands down, they're going to get their money back. We're not like that, right? We'll have a couple of drinks here and there, maybe some wine with dinner, but usually the drink package doesn't add up for us. In this particular case with the upgraded internet, the upgraded drinks package, the upgraded specialty dining, the specialty coffees, we more than got our money back out of that investment. Scott, real quick.
I would say that one area where Princess really stood out was our service. Our steward on the ship, Mark, he was exceptional. These stewards are like little magicians. You step into the hallway for a minute and when you walk back into your room, your bed's made, the bathroom's clean, new towels are there waiting for you. Mark just like, I don't know how he managed to take care of all of the guests at the level that he took care of us in our room.
Yeah. And one thing that I love is we met crew members from around the world. Many of them leave their families behind when they are gone anywhere from six to nine months at a time to do their contract. They basically work almost around the clock and often you'll see them at different jobs throughout the day. So if they wait your table at night, they may be doing the buffet at breakfast.
⁓ Christopher told us that his wife is always happy to see him when he comes home because he saved a lot of money. And then after a few months, she tells him it's time for him to go back to work and earn more money. But obviously he was just joking. But for many people working on the ship, the money that they are able to make is really life changing for them and their families back home. Our PSA to you would be don't forget to tip your servers.
In this case, also part of the package was that gratuities were included, but there were people like we've mentioned who really stood out and so
We wanted to give them just a little bit of something extra. And so you really have no idea how life changing it can be for them and their families, ⁓ even if it's just a really, a small token.
And when you do that, they are so grateful and they are so thankful. And really many of them do it because it is their job, but they also do it just because they love the interactions with the people and it shows. I do want to go and just at a very high level, talk about our itinerary. We're not going to talk about the ports that we stayed in. this had a really specific itinerary that we were looking at.
we started in Hobart, Australia, which is in Tasmania. We did ⁓ Australia, Southeast Asia and Singapore. And it was a great balance of sea days and ports. There's not much you can do about the number of days at sea because it's a lot of movement and there are some long distances between these spots. But for us, it checked all the right boxes. Melissa was able to check off Asia for the first time.
And both of us were able to check off Australia on our list of continents.
And so we obviously want more time in a lot of these locations, but it was really perfect to get a good sample of them and know where we would like to go back and spend more time and where it's like, honestly enough, especially for somewhere like Australia that really is so huge. And one of the things I want to say about the days at sea, it was really surprising. I think our longest stretch was five days and going into it, you're thinking like, wow, like that's a long time,
But for us, you were working, like we really kind of had a rhythm and a lot of people did that too, Even if they weren't working, people seem to have a rhythm, whether they like to read or go play their games or that kind of thing. And so it's almost like you're in like a small town or a little city or something like that,
You're not just sitting in your room. You go and you have these like little routines. So it honestly passed a lot faster than I think I expected that it would.
Well, let's talk a little bit about what we like most on the ship. A few highlights. What are the things that stood out most to you? So the first thing that comes to mind is definitely the people. I know that you mentioned that, but most of them, like you said, really do seem to love their jobs. They want to make sure that you have a good experience. You'll start to see them at the same locations or if they're working two jobs and you've kind of gotten to know them, they'll
come talk to you, they'll be at the same bars. They do really do make an effort to remember you as well. And so I think, just thinking back on this cruise and then other cruises that we have done, like you obviously can't get to know everybody, but there are a handful of people that will, you know, stand out to you, I think. So the people make the cruise for sure. For me, it was all the places across the ship where we could sit down in the afternoons
enjoy some live music and cocktail hour. It was a great opportunity to hang out with many of our newest friends and talk about our favorite subject, is travel.
And when we talk about our least favorite parts, let me just say, I think we're being a little bit picky. This was a great trip. was a comfortable ship and the staff was amazing. I think both of us would agree that ship is starting to show its age just a little bit. It's also a lot smaller, the room sizes, et cetera, than some of their newer ships.
Although they were putting it in dry dock after we got off to do some refurbishments, I doubt they're going to be able to do anything about those issues like the size of the bathroom, the size of the stateroom. The ship is the size that it is and unless they reduce the number of staterooms, that's not going to change. do think that some of that is reflected in the price though that you pay. And so I do think that if you're looking at different itineraries and you're looking at different ships,
you're going to notice that. Obviously, the newer ships are going to be a lot more expensive. So just keep that in mind. I mean, like you said, it really would be being picky. Like it really was fun. that I would say is the food repetition does become noticeable over time. And if you were on a one week cruise, like you wouldn't notice that, I don't think. The food was good.
It was just not a ton of variety. So I would say, for example, one of the things that we liked about that steakhouse, the specialty restaurant we went to a bunch of times is a long cruise like this and going this many times gave us a chance to try the different things and then go back to some of our favorites. I would say like we did the sit down lunch a few times, the sit down breakfast a couple of times and the menu was pretty much the same. And so if there wasn't like a lot of things that you maybe wanted to try.
So that would be the only thing. know, the buffet, the buffet they did try to vary that, but it would kind of be the same variation. We're very pleased though, that on Thanksgiving day, they somehow managed to find a turkey and some traditional Thanksgiving sides and desserts to go along with that for the Americans that were on the ship, all 76 of us.
So who do we think that Crown Princess and Princess Cruise Lines is best suited for?
So I would say probably travelers who value comfort and routine and I would say probably a good value for money. People who enjoy longer itineraries in a steady pace. If you're looking for like nightlife, cutting-edge design, really like food-focused cuisine that's like high-end, then that probably wouldn't be the right fit.
But if you just want a reliable, comfortable cruise, strong service, great staff, would say Princess does deliver on that.
