What is EFT?
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a a powerful tool based on research showing that emotional trauma affects our physical as well as our emotional health. Over 100 clinical trials have shown that EFT is effective for anxiety, depression, trauma, weight loss, insomnia, pain, phobias, and many physical diagnoses. EFT is able to rapidly reduce the negative emotions we feel when memories or events upset us.
How does EFT work?
EFT combines putting pressure or gently tapping our acupressure points with verbal calming statements that tell our brain that to respond to those memories or trigger events with calm rather than the stress we are used to feeling.
In EFT we think about an unpleasant or traumatic memory or event, thought, belief etc rather than deny it, avoid it, or push it out of our minds. We expose ourselves to it by acknowledging that it exists and that it is ok, whatever it is. And that we accept ourselves despite the existence of the problem.
We say, “Even though _________, I deeply and completely accept myself (or how I feel or the situation)”
The Acupressure part of the process relaxes us. Through MRI studies, it has been shown to regulate the part of the brain that contributes to the fear response. We are sending a relaxing signal to the emotional part of our brain when we practice acupressure.
The “Even Though” statement exposes us to the “problem” and activates those regions in our brain and we simultaneously tap so that we can soothe them - this makes the problem seem so much less severe.
We then go back and think about that distressing or traumatic memory and discover that the way that it upsets us has lessened or disappeared all together.
We can continue to tap on that memory, event, belief until it provides us with no negative stress or charge at all. Think of it as a magic eraser for your stress and all the things in your past that still bother you that you’d rather forget. The events still happened, they just don’t affect you the way they used to before using EFT on them.
How do I use EFT?
My favorite thing about EFT is that it can be used as a powerful self help tool to transform all areas of your life. Once you learn how to use EFT, you can literally apply it to anything you can think of: healing past traumas, busting limiting beliefs about yourself, changing your core beliefs about money, success, relationships, and the world, weight loss, anxiety, fears and phobias, insomnia, and manifesting the life you really want to live.
